CHICO -- Christine Vest led a Chico State assault on Cal State San Bernardino Saturday, scoring 16 points and collecting seven rebounds as the Wildcats throttled the Coyotes, 78-51, in the first CCAA conference women's basketball contest of the new year.
The Coyotes, 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA, will try and gain a split of their weekend road trip to Northern California with a game at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock Sunday. The game will be webcast at www.csusbathletics.com (Listen Live) or click on Live Stats at www.warriorathletics.com
CSUSB took an early 3-2 lead on a three-pointer by junior forward Amanda Ragains but Chico went ahead 6-5 shortly thereafter and just dominated the Coyotes at both ends of the court en route to a 27-point beatdown of the visitors before 392 fans in Acker Gym.
The Wildcats, 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA, shot 47 percent for the game while the Coyotes, hounded by an aggressive Wildcats defense, were just 17 of 62 from the field (27 percent) and event worse from the three-point line (3 of 17 -- 18 percent). And it was also a cold day at the free throw line for CSUSB. The team hit just 14 of 24 free throws (58 percent).
The 6-foot Ragains, a transfer from Rio Hondo College, played her best game of the season to date, scoring a team-high 13 points, blocking three shots and making two steals in just 15 minutes on the court. Senior Krystal Urzua finished with 11 points making just five of 14 shot attempts and just one of eight from the three. She did have a team-high four steals in the game.
Both teams were sloppy, turning over the ball 24 times each.
Every Chico State player scored in the game.
