HAYWARD -- Junior forward Kymberly Ooten exploited winless Cal State East Bay for 24 points and seven rebounds Thursday night to lead Cal State San Bernardino to an easy 77-48 CCAA conference women's basketball victory before 200 fans in Pioneer gymnasium.
The victory improved the Coyotes to 11-6 overall and 7-5 in the CCAA. The 11 wins equals the team's total for all of last season with 10 games remaining in the regular season. East Bay dropped to 0-17 and 0-12 in its first season in the NCAA Division II CCAA after moving up from Division III.
CSUSB will fly back to the Southland to face CCAA leader UC San Diego, currently ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 10 in the nation, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night in RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. The Coyotes beat the Tritons twice on their home court last season.
The Tritons came from 11 points down with nine minutes remaining in the game Thursday to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 71-69 on a three-pointer by Chelsea Carlisle with 25 seconds left. The Tritons are 16-1 overall and 11-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos dropped to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Ooten hit 11 of 20 field goal attempts and accounted for two steals in 29 minutes as the Coyotes shot 53 percent for the game (33 of 62), well above the team's season average of 36 percent.
Senior Krystal Urzua, the team's leading scorer at 16.8 points a game, kept her average there with a 17-point performance, hitting three of four field goals from three-point range and contributing three assists and two steals.
Junior point guard Lisa Takata had a season-high 10 points to go with six assists. Senior Ashlee Ford also had six assists in her 23 minutes on the court. Senior Nikki Boone had nine points and five rebounds while Emily Vore scored eight points and nabbed five rebounds coming off the bench.
Colleen Cooley led the Pioneers with 11 points. Lauren Lucchesi had a game-high eight rebounds for CSUEB.
The Coyotes never trailed in the game and led 48-20 at the half after hiting 21 of 33 shots (63 percent) in the first 20 minutes while the hosts made just eight of 32 shots (25 percent), finishing the game with a 32 percent success rate. The Coyotes had 18 points on East Bay turnovers.
CSUSB, at one point in the first half, was up 36-7 on a jumper by Boone. CSUSB's largest lead was 33 points with 2:18 left in the game.
