SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State San Bernardino had no answer for 5-11 San Francisco State senior Donisha Tate and couldn't muster any offense of its own Saturday night in a 63-46 CCAA conference women's basketball defeat at the hands of the Gators.
The Coyotes shot just 29.7 percent from the field for the game, 21 percent from the three-point line and just 38 percent from the foul line after making just six of 31 shots in the first half (19 percent) while falling behind 28-14 at intermission. CSUSB went scoreless in the final 5:31 of that period.
Tate outscored the Coyotes team in the first half with 15 points and 10 rebounds and finished the night with 19 points and 18 rebounds to help the Gators improve to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA as both teams completed first round of play in the conference.
The Coyotes, who rallied to nip Cal State Monterey Bay 59-57 on Friday night, dropped to 10-6 on the season and 6-5 in the CCAA and ended a modest three-game win streak in the process.
CSUSB's leading scorer, Krystal Urzua was scoreless in the first half but finished strong with 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals but it wasn't enough to get the Coyotes back in the game as they trailed by as much as 26 points with 11 minutes left in the game.
Senior Morgan Pryor had another productive night for CSUSB with nine points, five rebounds and three steals although she made just four of 14 shots from the field, indicative of the team's cold shooting in the Gators' main gym. Junior Kymberly Ooten scored all eight of her points in the second half as well.
Urzua and Ooten, the team's top two scorers on the season were a combined 0-9 shooting in the first half.
SFSU shot 48 percent for the game (22 of 46) and made three of nine long-range shots and sank 16 of 22 free throws (73 percent). CSUSB was 19 of 64 from the field, just 3 of 14 from the three and a woeful five of 13 from the foul line.
The Coyotes will return home and prepare for the team's "commuter airline" road trip next week starting Thursday at Cal State East Bay in Hayward and continuing Saturday at UC San Diego.
