Coyotes down Cal State L.A., 65-52

CSUSB women pull away from Golden Eagles in second half for 8th win

     Cal State San Bernardino pulled away from Cal State L.A. in the second half Friday night for a 65-52 CCAA conference women's basketball victory before a small crowd in Coussoulis Arena.
    The victory improved the Coyotes to 8-5 overall and evened their CCAA record at 4-4. The Golden Eagles are now 3-10 on the season and 1-7 in the conference.
    CSUSB hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m. Saturday while L.A. is at Cal Poly Pomona.
    Junior Kymberly Ooten led the Coyotes with 17 points and nine rebounds while senior Krystal Urzua, the team's leading scorer at 17.8 points a game coming into the weekend, settled for 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Emily Vore came off the bench to score nine points for CSUSB.
    Jazzi Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 21 points and three steals.
    CSUSB outrebounded the Golden Eagles 42-26 and 17-9 on the offensive glass. 
    L.A. shot 40 percent for the game (20 of 50) while the Coyotes shot 41.5 percent (22 of 53). L.A. hit four of nine 3-pointers (44 percent) while CSUSB was just four of 15 (27 percent) but the Coyotes outscored the visitors 17-8 at the foul line.
    It was a see-saw first half with the lead changing four times and the score was tied twice, but CSUSB forged a four-point halftime lead at 29-25 on a three-pointer by Brittany Groves with 49 seconds left in the half.
    L.A. narrowed the gap to two at 30-28 in the first minute of the second half on a three-pointer by Sonia Miller but the Coyotes gradually pulled away from the Golden Eagles, until the lead reached 11 points at 48-37 on a pair of free throws by Ford with 9:57 remaining.
    Ooten's jumper at the 7:56 mark put CSUSB up by 16 points at 54-38. The Coyotes biggest lead of the night (17 points) came on a 4:48 on a free throw by Urzua that put CSUSB up 59-42.
    The Coyotes outscored the Golden Eagles 20-10 in the paint and had 21 second-chance points off offensive rebounds to just 11 for L.A. CSULA's bench outscored the Coyotes 35-23.
