Playing at home for the first time in a month, Cal State San Bernardino's softball team made the most of it, sweeping a CCAA conference doubleheader from San Francisco State on Friday, 5-1 and 7-3, at Coyote Softball Park.
The sweep improved the Coyotes to 11-17 overall and 6-8 in the CCAA while the Gators slipped to 9-12 on the season and 4-10 in the CCAA. The same two teams conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
In the opener, senior right-hander
Debbie Shisler (7-5) pitched a three-hitter, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter as the Coyotes broke open a 2-1 game in the fifth with three unearned runs that came across on a Gators throwing error.
CSUSB took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double in the first by junior
Ashley Collinwood, but the Gators tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a home run to left by Lea Cardenas. The Coyotes went up 2-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by junior second baseman
Brittney Hoban after pinch-runner
Erin Fernandez stole second.
In the fifth, the Coyotes' first two batters singled and then
Alex Mitchell beat out an infield hit as Gators third baseman Cardenas threw wildly to first, allowing all three runners to score.
Cardenas was 2-for-3 in the game while Mitchell was 2-for-3 for CSUSB with two runs scored. Ashley Jackson (5-4) took the loss for the Gators, pitching 4.2 innings and giving up seven hits. Only two of the five runs charged to her were earned.
In the second game, CSUSB freshman right-hander
Maggie Karros earned her first collegiate win, going six innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits and striking out two. Karros got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and sophomore
Cassidy Lee pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the win.
SFSU used the long ball to take an early 2-0 lead on a two-run blast by Kelsey Wood off Karros in the top of the first. The Coyotes came back with a run in the bottom of the first as Mitchell tripled and scored on a base hit by Collinwood.
The Coyotes took a 3-2 lead in the second off starter Kendra Wood as
Courtney Wilhelms doubled to lead off the inning, Karros singled up the middle and took second on the throw-in before Shisler, the designated hitter in the lineup, doubled to left center to drive in both runners.
CSUSB added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by
Jacquelyn Holtzclaw and scored three times in the fifth on a two-run double by
Tori Beaudette and an RBI single by Karros who helped her own cause by going 3-for-3 in the game. Collinwood was 2-for-3. For SFSU, Danielle Chapman, Karolyn Gubbine and Kelsey Wood each had a pair of hits in a 12-hit attack but the Gators stranded 10 runners in the game.
