Four Cal State San Bernardino pitchers combined to hurl a four-hit shutout Sunday as Cal State San Bernardino swept its CCAA baseball series with Cal State Monterey Bay with a 7-0 victory before 165 sun-baked fans at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
Erick Carrillo went six innings, gave up three hits, struck out seven and walked two to get the win as the Coyotes improved their record to 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in the CCAA while the Otters dripped to 3-18 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Austin Thiel, the Otters' starter, struck out the side in the first inning and fanned six in his five innings of work but took the loss, yielding six runs, four of them earned on seven hits.
Johnnie Haas and
Brent Planck each had two hits and drove in two runs apiece for the Coyotes. Daniel Barras had a double for the Otters' only extra base hit of the game.
Carrillo gave way to
Jorge Dryjanski, Casey Cassidy and Ernie Media, who finished up the shutout, allowing just one hit over the final three innings while striking out three batters.
CSUSB took a 1-0 lead in the third on an unearned run, then scored five in the fourth on four hits including a two-run single by Planck and a two-run double by Haas for a 6-0 advantage. The Coyotes got their final run in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Jesus Beltran.
It was a tough weekend for the Otters who managed just four runs in 34 innings against the Coyotes pitching staff and only one run in their last 16 innings.
