Chad Borowski (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter
Daniel Stenavich who yielded two runs in 7.1 innings of work. Michael Trump (0-2) took the loss in relief of Patrick McClain who dazzled the Coyotes for 7.2 innings. McClain had a perfect game going until
Jesus Beltran singled off him with two out in the fourth.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth with two out, McClain walked
Kyle Davis and
Johnnie Haas singled to put runners on first and second. Beltran's dribbler up the third base line was fielded by McClain who threw wide to first base as Davis scored from second. Freshman
Darren Dworak then singled in Haas to tie the game. Both runs were unearned.
Trump relieved McClain to get the third out.
After Borowski set the Otters down in order in the top of the ninth, CSUSB's
Cody Madison tripled to center to lead off the home half of the inning. Otters' Coach Rich Aldrete elected to intentionally walk pinch hitter Omar Manzanares and catcher
Chris LeFay to load the bases for a possible force play at the plate.
CSUSB sent up pinch-hitter
Julio Torres and Aldrete replaced Trump with reliever Brock Maestas but the strategy backfired when Maestas walked in the winning run..
The Coyotes managed just six hits and were blanked for the first seven innings, extending their scoreless inning streak to 23 before breaking through in the eighth.
It was a tough luck loss for the Otters and McClain, who entered the game with a 1.89 earned run average and struck out four while walking only one and allowing just four hits.
Shea Davis was three-for-five for the Otters while Andrew Marquardt was two-for-four with two runs scored. Jacob Flores was two-for-two in a nine-hit Otters attack. Madison had two hits in four at bats for CSUSB.
