Tritons down Coyotes women, 69-55

Carlisle leads defending CCAA champs; Urzua scores 21 for CSUSB

    Three-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion UC San Diego opened defense of its titles Friday night with a 69-55 victory over host Cal State San Bernardino before 214 fans in Coussoulis Arena. 
    The Tritons (2-0, 1-0 in the CCAA) scored the first 10 points of the game and were never headed by the Coyotes (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) who shot 32 percent for the game while the Tritons scorched the nets at 56 percent. 
    Chelsea Carlisle led the Tritons with 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in 22 minutes. Head Coach Charity Elliott used 14 players in the game and nobody played more than Carlisle and Tiffany Hunter. 
    The Coyotes were led by all-CCAA guard Krystal Urzua with 21 points, including four of seven from three-point range. Urzua contributed four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 36 minutes. 
    Senior point guard Ashlee Ford had 11 points and three assists in 22 minutes. 
    Junior Kymberly Ooten, who averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds in the team's first two games of the season, finished with eight points and four rebounds and four steals. 
    The game was ragged at times as the teams committed 36 turnovers between them. UCSD was credited with 11 steals, three by Annette Ilg, who had eight points and five rebounds as well. 
    The Coyotes rallied from the early 10-0 deficit to trail 32-25 at halftime. However, the Tritons came out firing in the second half and opened up a 16-point lead at 44-28, outscoring the Coyotes 12-3 in the run, UCSD's biggest lead was 19 at 55-36 with 7:56 left in the game. 
    The Tritons outscored CSUSB 36-16 in the paint and the Tritons outrebounded the Coyotes 43-29. The UCSD bench outpointed the CSUSB bench 25-18. 
    UCSD moves on to face Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m. Saturday while the Coyotes host Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m.
