LA JOLLA -- Freshman forward Kristina Gomez finished off a crossing pass from freshman Kelsey Gudgeon in double overtime Sunday to give Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego at the Tritons field.
    Gomez shared hero honors with junior goalkeeper Laura Lyons and the Coyotes defensive which held the Tritons scoreless until the end. Lyons made three saves of shots on goal by UCSD.
    The victory improved the record of the West Region fifth-ranked Coyotes to 6-2-2 on the season and a 4-1-1 CCAA record, good enough for first place in the CCAA's South Division. The Tritons are now 4-2 in the conference after the loss, 7-2-1 overall.
    It was the first goal of the season for Gomez who had a couple serious shots on goal against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Friday's dramatic 1-0 loss with two seconds left in regulation but her shots were stopped by the Toros keeper.
    Gomez gathered in a crossing pass from Gudgeon and her hard shot went off the hands of UCSD keeper Jessica McGovern and found the net for the victory.
    CSUSB had other chances to score in the match. Lindsey Jordan's shot at 9:12 was stopped by McGovern as was Unity Bedingfield's shot at 42:54 of the first half. Just 30 seconds from the end of regulation, McGovern stopped a shot by freshman Casey Hirsch.
    Meanwhile, Lyons saved shots by UCSD at 27:43, 40:38 and 63:02.
    After an uneventful first 10-minute overtime, the Coyotes went on the attack. Bedingfield's shot on goal just 52 seconds into the final overtime was corraled by McGovern. CSUSB came right back to score the match-decider two minutes later at 1:02.49.
    CSUSB will return home next weekend to host San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Sunday at Coyote Premier Field.
