POMONA, Calif. - California State University San Bernardino women's soccer fell 1-0 to Cal Poly Pomona Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium in a key matchup in the CCAA title race.
With the loss, the Coyotes move to 8-4-4 overall and 7-2-3 in conference play.
Junior forward Maya Alston had a golden opportunity to give CSUSB an early lead just 40 seconds into the match, but the Broncos' goalkeeper stopped her low effort.
Following that chance, offense was hard to come by for either side. Pomona held a narrow 3-2 edge in shots through the opening half as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
The physical battle continued after the break, with CSUSB struggling to create chances against the Broncos' defense. A second yellow card left the Coyotes down a player in the 80th minute.
Three minutes later, Pomona broke the deadlock with a strike from outside the box into the upper-left corner, leaving Ortiz with no chance.
Pomona finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on target.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Ortiz played all 90 minutes and made four saves. With the loss, her record moves to 7-3-3 on the season.
With a spot in the CCAA Tournament secured, the Yotes close out the regular season at Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward.
