CHICO -- Sophomore
Megan Monahan, set up for a clear shot on goal via two quick passes from teammates, blasted home the match-deciding goal in the second overtime Sunday to give Cal State San Bernardino a 2-1 CCAA conference women's soccer victory over Chico State.
Monahan's first goal of 2008 came in the 108th minute off two critical passes from senior forward
Krista Feer and sophomore forward
Katie Liby, enabling CSUSB, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, to improve to 5-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the CCAA.
Head Coach Diego Bocanegra said before the road trip he'd be happy if his team came home with a win and a tie and that's exactly what happened since the Coyotes battled Cal State Stanislaus to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on Friday.
It was the third straight double overtime contest for Chico State and the first two ended in ties. The Wildcats are now 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the CCAA.
After a scoreless first half, Feer opened the scoring by flicking a header into the goal off a corner kick from freshman
Casey Hirsch. The Wildcats got the equalizer in the 65th minute on a header by Brittney Doty off a pass into a crowd in the box by Kasey Wall.
The match remained scoreless until Monahan's big shot less than two minutes from the end of the second overtime.
Junior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons stopped three shots on goal. Natalie Bensky had a pair of saves for Chico State in her net. CSUSB outshot the hosts 14-10.
