Coyotes stay unbeaten, sweep Warriors

All 15 players contribute to 11th victory, 3-0, over Cal State Stanislaus

Mercedes Winchester came off the bench to notch a team-high six kills in the 3-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus.
    Top-ranked Cal State San Bernardino utilized its entire bench Saturday night en route to a 3-0 sweep of Cal State Stanislaus in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball match before 415 fans in Coussoulis Arena. 
    The Coyotes (11-0 overall, 4-0 in the CCAA) utilized every weapon in their repertoire against the Warriors with all 15 players contributing offensively or defensively to the point only one of them reached double figures in any statistical category. 
    Yet, the dominated the young Warriors team with only one senior and one junior by scores of 25-17, 25-10, 25-15. Stanislaus is now 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA after losing 3-0 to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night. 
    Jen Gee of Cal State Stanislaus was the leading kill artist on the night with 10. Redshirt freshman Mercedes Winchester led the Coyotes with six kills off the bench. Starters Sara Rice, Sara Hoffman and Jessica Granados played only one set, the first one. 
    CSUSB hit .328 on the night on 32 kills in 67 attacks with 10 errors. Reserve setter Alyssa Auck had 17 assists. Colleen Sullivan had a match-high 22 assists for the Warriors. Stanislaus was plagued by 12 service errors and 23 hitting errors and wound up with a .013 hitting percentage. 
    The Warriors were in the match in the first set, which featured eight ties early in the set. A CSUSB attack error allowed Stanislaus to tie the set at 8-8, but CSUSB went on a 7-1 run to lead 15-9 on a Warriors attack error. CSUSB led by eight at 23-15 on a kill by freshman Megan Johnson.
    CSUSB led wire to wire in the second set with reserves seeing most of the action. The score was tied briefly at 1-1 in the third set before the Coyotes pulled away.
    Winchester, Deanna Bathauer, Johnson and Morgan Carty combined for 18 of the team's 32 kills in the match.
    The Coyotes, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, will take on No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Coussoulis Arena.
