Unbeaten Cal State San Bernardino opened up a 6-0 lead in the first four innings Tuesday en route to an 8-2 non-conference baseball victory over previously-unbeaten Cal Baptist of Riverside at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The Coyotes, 4-0, got another solid start from their pitching staff as senior right-hander Bryan W. Hart went five innings, scattered four hits and allowed just one run, making him the fourth starter in as many games to go at least five innings and come away with the win. Hart is now 1-0. Lancers starter Bobby Kelley (1-1) took the loss.
The Lancers entered the game undefeated at 7-0 and ranked No. 13 in the NAIA.
Senior first baseman Jason Klug drove in three of the Coyote runs, two coming on a sacrifice fly that enabled Coyotes runners on second and third to score when two Lancer outfielders collided as the ball was caught and both fell to the ground. Klug now has eight RBI on the season.
Senior second baseman Mike Minjares was a pest for the Coyotes all afternoon, scoring three times, driving in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a single and stealing two bases. Junior shortstop Danny Soles and senior left fielder Justin Watson each had two hits in the 10-hit Coyotes attack.
Zach Aguirre and Brandon Peters each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Lancers who got just seven hits off three Coyotes pitchers.
David Martin, a senior right-hander who relieved Hart in the sixth, pitched three innings of one-hit relief before giving way to lefty Eric Meyerholtz in the ninth. Levi Garrett, the third of four CBU pitchers, pitched two innings of hitless relief.
CSUSB got a run in the first when Minjares was hit by a pitch leading off, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Klug's infield hit to deep short. The Coyotes made it 3-0 in the third when Klug's fly ball to right center was caught as outfielders Robert Lundy and J.P. Lapointe collided and fell to the ground, sending home Minjares and Soles.
It became 6-0 in the fourth when the Coyotes linked five hits and a wild pitch to double their score.
CBU broke through against Hart in the fifth on an RBI double by Peters and got their final tally off Meyerholtz in the ninth when Sean Kelley singled, moved to third on a double by Steve Carrillo and scored on an infield out.
The Coyotes will play at non-conference game at Cal Poly Pomona at 2 p.m. Thursday before hosting Colorado State-Pueblo, coached by former Aquinas HS and San Bernardino Valley College baseball coach Stan Sanchez, at 2 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at ACUP.
