Gators edge CSUSB on early goal

Coyotes women dominate play but can't get equalizer; face Otters Sunday

Jaclyn Clark had two shot attempts in 1-0 loss to San Francisco State Friday.

SAN BERNARDINO – Junior forward Zoila Marquez scored the only goal of the match Friday as San Francisco State defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, in a CCAA conference women's soccer match between two regionally-ranked teams at Coyote Premier Field.
Marquez' match-winner came just 4:24 into the match as senior defender Lauren Candia flicked a ball over the last defender and Marquez ran onto it and then drilled a low shot past a charging goalkeeper from 18 yards out.
The victory improved the Gators' record to 6-4-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the CCAA North Division. With the loss, the Coyotes are 6-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the CCAA South Division. SFSU came into the match ranked eighth in the West Region while the Coyotes were No. 4.
The Gators had only two shots on goal the entire match and Marquez had both of them. The second one came in the second half and her hooking ball headed for the far post was collected by CSUSB goalkeeper Laura Lyons
Cal State San Bernardino dominated the match for most of the first half and most of the second, getting off a total of nine shots, but only one shot – by CSUSB freshman Kelsey Gudgeon – required a save on the part of Gators' keeper Emily Hart who earned the shutout.
CSUSB had some chances to score but at least three point-blank shots on goal sailed wide.
The Coyotes will host Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. Sunday while the Gators take on Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona.
