PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team edged Grand Canyon University, 1-0, Wednesday night on a goal by freshman
Casey Hirsch in a non-conference match at the Antelopes field.
The Coyotes equaled their win total for all of 2007 with five matches remaining in the regular season. Their record is now 8-4-3. The team is ranked No. 6 in the latest West Region poll.
Hirsch's third goal of the season broke a scoreless deadlock that extended to the 51st minute. She finished off a pass from freshman
Kristina Gomez into a wide open net.
The Coyotes were very active offensively, outshooting the host Antelopes 18-6 but GCU goalkeeper Shela Robertson managed to save eight shots, three of them off the foot of senior
Krista Feer. Hirsch had another try stopped by Robertson.
Grand Canyon mustered but two shots on goal the entire 90 minutes. Junior
Laura Lyons and senior
Leslie Rhodes split time in goal for CSUSB and each saved one scoring attempt. It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Coyotes.
It was a frustrating time for the hosts, who have been on the short end of two of their last three one-goal decisions. The 'Lopes are now 3-8-1.
CSUSB will take on Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference match Sunday.
