Just days after being voted No. 1 in the first NCAA Division II Pacific Region poll of the season, the Cal State San Bernardino women's volleyball team coasted past Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay by identical 3-0 scores in a pair of CCAA conference matches this weekend.
The sweeps improved CSUSB to 11-0 in the conference and 19-1 overall to maintain the No. 2 spot in the AVCA Top 25 national poll. The team is now 46-3 since the start of the 2006 season.
The victories enabled the Coyotes to open up a three-game lead over its nearest foe in the drive for a fifth CCAA championship in the last eight seasons.
Jessica Granados, the AVCA/NCAA Div. II player of the week for her work in wins over Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus the previous week, led the win over Sonoma State with 18 kills, three assists and nine digs.
Ashtin Hall had 11 kills and five blocks, two of them solo along with two service aces.
Sara Hoffman, ranked No. 2 in the nation in assists, had 38 as the Coyotes prevailed 30-21, 30-26 and 30-24 over the Seawolves, now 3-7 in the CCAA.
Sara Rice chipped in eight kills, four digs and five blocks, two of them solo against a Sonoma team coming off two huge upsets over Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego, both nationally-ranked.
At Monterey Bay, the Coyotes won by scores of 30-27, 30-16 and 30-24 with Hall leading the way with 11 kills in 22 attacks (.409 hitting) and a solo block. Hoffman had 30 assists. Haas and
Lindsey Olhausen combined for 24 digs. Junior
Jennifer Washington, subbing for Rice, had five kills in seven attacks (.714 hitting) with two blocks.
