SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - #8 California State University San Bernardino men's soccer ran its season-opening unbeaten streak to nine games on Sunday, defeating Chico State 3-0 in a CCAA contest at Premier Field.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 7-0-2 overall on the season and 3-0-0 in CCAA action.
The Coyotes broke through late in the first half, scoring the first goal of the game in the 43rd minute. Sophomore Josiah Martinez finished off a clinical passing play by chipping a Diego Lopez feed past the charging Wildcat goalkeeper for his first collegiate goal. Titus Alviso was credited with a secondary assist on the tally.
CSUSB doubled their lead in the 66th minute after a video review confirmed that an Alviso shot got over the goal line for his second marker of the season. Anthony Luna played a ball into Alviso, who was tackled just as the ball reached his feet, but the sophomore was able to get just enough to get the ball just inches over the goal line. A secondary helper went to senior Kai Djerbaka.
The Yotes got one more for good measure in the 75th minute to cap the scoring. Alviso played a ball forward from the midfield to sophomore Nevin Rueegger, who deposited it into the bottom left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
In goal, fifth-year Donovan Palomares stopped all four shots he faced to earn his fifth win and fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Coyotes will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Stanislaus State for a 4 p.m. kickoff against the Warriors in Turlock.
