SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - California State University San Bernardino women's soccer defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 2-0 Friday afternoon in a CCAA contest at Premier Field.
With the victory, the Coyotes move to 3-2-2 and stay unbeaten in CCAA play at 2-0-1.
The game nearly went to halftime scoreless, until senior Valerie Garcia connected for her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute. Garcia stayed onside by a hair as Angelyn Pena played a ball over the top from the back. The Lumberjack keeper charged out to play the ball, but Garcia won the race and chipped the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Early in the second half, CSUSB doubled their lead off a set piece. A corner kick from Unieque Solis-Marquina in the 50th minute was punched right to the foot of sophomore Marianne Tarin, who tucked it in just under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead.
The Yotes defense stepped up in the final 40 minutes, allowing only one Cal Poly Humboldt shot on target in the second half to prevent any possibility of a comeback bid.
In goal, senior Bella Ortiz turned aside all three shots she faced to earn her second victory of the season. It is her third consecutive clean sheet to open CCAA play, and her shutout streak now sits at over 280 minutes.
The Coyotes will be back in action on Sunday with a contest against Chico State at Premier Field. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
