SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - #8 California State University San Bernardino men's soccer defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 3-1 Friday afternoon in a CCAA contest at Premier Field.
With the victory, the Coyotes remain unbeaten and move to 6-0-2 overall on the season and 2-0-0 in CCAA play.
CSUSB dominated possession and chances in the opening half, and finally broke the ice in the 30th minute. After the Coyotes applied heavy pressure in the opening half an hour, senior Aaron Sullivan opened the scoring by heading a Diego Lopez corner kick into the bottom right corner of the net to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
Sullivan's tally was the lone goal of the first half, despite the field being tilted in Cal State San Bernardino's favor. CSUSB led the shot count 9-0, and took four corners to Humboldt's zero.
Two Coyotes goals in the span of just seven seconds in the 74th minute put the contest out of reach for the Lumberjacks. Sophomore Nevin Rueegger scored the second Coyote goal after tapping home a Titus Alviso cross for a 2-0 lead. Ty Kerns earned a secondary assist for his feed to Alviso.
Immediately after the restart, senior Brandon Prince buried his first goal as a Coyote to put the Yotes up by three after his shot deflected in off a Lumberjack defender.
In the 79th minute, Cal Poly Humboldt got on the board on a free kick, ending the shutout bid of senior Cody Lindeman. Lindeman would make one save in the contest to earn his second win of the season.
The Coyotes continued to hold a significant edge in shots in the second half, outshooting the Lumberjacks 17-4 to finish the game with a margin of 26-4.
The Coyotes will be back in action on Sunday with a contest against Chico State at Premier Field. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
