SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - #18 California State University San Bernardino men's soccer defeated Texas A&M International 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Premier Field.
With the win, CSUSB stays unbeaten with a record of 4-0-2 on the season.
Neither team found the net in the opening half, as the Coyotes were held in check despite a 15-3 shot advantage. The Texas A&M International keeper stopped all four shots he faced on target, while Coyote fifth-year netminder Donovan Palomares turned aside the one Dustdevil shot on target.
The shot barrage continued for the Coyotes in the second half, and they finally broke through in the 71st minute. After a VAR check, the Yotes were awarded a penalty kick, and senior Alix Soukup stepped up and buried a shot into the top right corner of the goal for the icebreaker.
Soukup's tally opened the floodgates, as CSUSB scored again just 80 seconds later when sophomore Diego Lopez netted his first collegiate goal off assists from Aaron Sullivan and Angel Montes De Oca. Exactly a minute later, CSUSB capitalized on a set piece as Damian Gonzalez nodded home a Lopez free kick for the third Coyote goal in 2:20.
Senior Rafa Fonseca added one more for good measure in the 88th minute to close out CSUSB's shutout win. Senior Brandon Prince was credited with an assist after his cross from the left found the foot of Fonseca at the back post for his second goal of the season.
Palomares made one more save late to finish the clean sheet with two saves.Â
For the game, the Coyotes held a lopsided 28-5 edge in shots, with a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. CSUSB also led Texas A&M International with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks in the victory.
Next, CSUSB will open CCAA play with a contest at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, September 20. Kickoff between the Coyotes and Cougars is slated for 2 p.m.
