Softball Splits Final Road Doubleheader of Regular Season

SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUSB won a 13-11 slugfest in game one, before being blanked 9-0 in game two.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 21-25 overall on the season and 10-16 in CCAA play.

Game 1 - CSUSB 13, Cal State Monterey Bay 11

The teams traded runs all game long, with only three scoreless half innings in the entire game.

Monterey Bay struck first with a pair in the bottom of the first, but CSUSB got one back on an Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) RBI single in the top of the second inning.

After Monterey Bay scored three times to take a 5-1 lead in the second, CSUSB trimmed the lead back down to 5-3 when junior Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) deposited one over the left center field fence.

Another RBI came from Legler in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but the Yotes still trailed 7-4. After conceding one more run in the bottom of the fourth, the Coyotes pulled to within one by posting three runs in the top of the fifth. Venegas drove in her third run of the game with a double up the middle, before senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) belted a two-run homer to left, closing the score to 8-7.

CSUSB turned the game upside down in the top of the sixth by scoring five times. Senior Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) leveled the score with an RBI groundout, before redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) put the Coyotes on top with an RBI base hit. Bejarano's second home run of the game broke the contest open, a three-run shot over the wall in left center.

Cal State Monterey Bay got three back on a three-run shot of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but an insurance run came home courtesy of a single through the left side in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, her second shutout frame, to earn her fifth save of the season.

The win was credited to redshirt sophomore Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.), who allowed three earned runs over 2.1 relief innings.

Offensively, Castillo led the Coyotes with an impressive 4-for-4 showing with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Venegas went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 2 - Cal State East Bay 9, CSUSB 0 (5 Innings)

The offensive firepower that led the Coyotes to the game one win was absent in game two, as the Otters shut down the Coyote bats.

CSUSB recorded just four hits in the defeat, while Cal State Monterey Bay plated four in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth for more offense than they would need.

Legler was responsible for two of CSUSB's knocks, while seniors Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) and Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) each recorded one hit.

CSUSB will be back in town for its final series of the regular season against Cal State San Marcos starting on Friday.
