SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team dropped a pair of contests to Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon in a CCAA doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Coyotes dropped game one 9-6, before being blanked 6-0 in game two.
With the defeats, the Coyotes fall to 20-24 overall on the season and 9-15 in CCAA play.
Game 1 - Cal State Monterey Bay 9, CSUSB 6
Monterey Bay struck first with a three run homer in the bottom of the first, before the Yotes responded in the top of the third when senior catcher
Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) doubled to center field to plate classmate
Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) and junior
Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.).Â
Another home run in the botto of the third gave the Otters the lead right back at 5-2, but senior
Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) cleared the bases with a three-run double in the top of the fourth to level the score at 5-5.
The Otters pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth for all the offense they would need. Moite notched an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the comeback bid fell far short and Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the first game of the series.
Legler took the loss in the circle, striking out four over six innings pitched. Moite, Griego, and Legler were the only Coyotes with two hits each, contributing six of CSUSB's eight knocks.
Game 2 - Cal State Monterey Bay 6, CSUSB 0
CSUSB outhit the Otters 7-5 in the final game of the day, but failed to ge the timely hitting they needed in the game two defeat.Â
Monterey Bay scored four runs in the first and two in the fourth for all the offense they would need in the win.
Of CSUSB's seven hits, two each came off the bats of Brazill, Legler, and redshirt sophomore
Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.).
Sophomore
Ava Paquin was tagged with the loss, allowing six earned over 3.1 innings. Redshirt sophomore
Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.) was sharp in relief, throwing 2.2 shutout frames.
Next up, the Coyotes and Otters will wrap up their series on Saturday with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
