CHICO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Chico State Thursday evening to open their CCAA series at Nettleton Stadium.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 15-15 overall and 7-6 in the CCAA.
Neither team scored until the top of the seventh inning, when Coyote senior
Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke the ice with a two-run homer to put the Yotes on top 2-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Chico State got one back on a double, and an inning later took the lead for good with a two-run double to turn their one-run deficit into a one-run advantage.
Trailing for the first time in the contest, the Yotes went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, sealing the victory for the host Wildcats.
Coyote redshirt senior
Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) looked sharp, but finished with a no-decision. He threw 7+ innings, allowing two earned on two hits with eight strikeouts.
The Yotes and Wildcats will play games two and three of their series on Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch of the first game of the twinbill is slated for 1 p.m.
