Baseball Splits CCAA Doubleheader with Chico State

CHICO, Calif. — The California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a Friday CCAA doubleheader at Chico State, falling in game one 10-4 before responding with a dominant 12-0 in the nightcap at Nettleton Stadium.

With the split, the Coyotes sit at 16-16 and 8-7 in CCAA play.

Game 1: Chico State 10, CSUSB 4

The Wildcats jumped out early, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) led off the third with singles. Alfaro scored after Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly, getting CSUSB on the board.

However, Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) quickly shifted momentum, hitting a go-ahead three-run home run on the next at-bat and giving CSUSB its first lead of the game at 3-2.

Chico State responded in the fourth inning with three runs to regain the lead. Later, Rodriguez inched the Yotes closer with an RBI double in the fifth, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 5-4. From there, however, Chico State pulled away, scoring five more runs while holding CSUSB scoreless.

Rodriguez and Barto each recorded two RBIs to lead the Coyotes in game one, while Alfaro led the team with two hits.

On the mound, Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) took the loss, going four innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two.

Alfaro followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0, and the lead stretched to 4-0 on a Dominguez groundout. Barto capped the inning with an RBI double, pushing the advantage to 5-0.

The Coyotes added on in the fifth inning, as Alejandro McKay (San Diego, Calif.) delivered an RBI single following a lead-off double by Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.), extending the lead.
CSUSB continued the scoring in the sixth. Juni Rodriguez delivered an RBI single to make it 7-0. With the bases loaded, Luna drew a walk to bring in another run, and Patrick Fregoso (Eastvale, Calif.) followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.

Derek Hurtado (Murrieta, Calif.) then tripled, bringing in two runs to make it 11-0. He later scored on a Dominguez groundout, giving the Coyotes a 12-0 lead that held the rest of the way.

On the mound, Kailer Saunders (Boise, Idaho) was dominant, improving to 4-2 with a complete-game shutout. The right-hander allowed six hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out five over seven innings.

Offensively, Alfaro recorded two multi-hit games on the day, bringing his team-leading total to 15 on the season. Barto and Luna each finished with three hits, while Dominguez, Giesegh, and Hurtado each drove in two runs.
