SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Bernardino baseball team dropped a high-scoring Sunday contest, falling 13-11 to No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Coyotes move to 19-21 overall and 11-12 in CCAA play.
CSUSB struck early, as freshman
Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) drove in
Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and senior
Patrick Fregoso (Eastvale, Calif.) followed with a solo home run in the second inning to give the Coyotes a 2-0 advantage.
The lead held until the fifth, when the Otters evened the score in the fifth, before erupting for seven runs in the sixth to take control at 9-2.
The Coyotes answered in a big way in the seventh.
Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) led off the inning with a home run, and a few batters later, Fregoso delivered a bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to 9-6.
Senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) added an RBI groundout, Rodriguez drew a bases-loaded walk, and Pettingill reached on a fielder's choice to score senior
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.), tying the game at 9-9.
Cal State Monterey Bay responded with four runs in the bottom half to regain the lead for good. Pettingill kept CSUSB within striking distance with a two-out, two-run homer, but the Coyotes' comeback fell short as the Otters secured the sweep.
Alfaro and Pettingill paced the offense with three hits apiece, while Pettingill and Fregoso each drove in four runs. Starter
Chad Horton (Menifee, Calif.) turned in a solid outing, allowing two earned runs over 4.2 innings, but
Jojo Duran (San Bernardino, Calif.) was tagged with the loss in relief.
The Coyotes return home next weekend to host Cal State East Bay in a four-game CCAA series beginning Friday.
