Softball Drops Final Two Games vs. #9 Cal State East Bay

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a pair of CCAA contests to #9 Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon at the CSUSB Softball Park.

The Coyotes fell 3-1 in game one, before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

The sweep sees the Yotes drop to 20-22 overall on the season and 9-13 in the CCAA.

Game 1: Cal State East Bay 3, CSUSB 1

Cal State East Bay scored single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. CSUSB scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice from junior Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.)

CSUSB had five hits in the loss, and left nine runners on base. Junior Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) came up with two outs in the bottom of the seventh representing the tying run, but flew out to the warning track to end the game.

Coyote senior Mia Escujuri (Chino, Calif.) was the only player on either side with multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 at the dish.

The CSUSB loss was charged to starter Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.), who threw 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out a pair. Sophomore Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) threw 2.1 shutout innings in relief, conceding only two hits.

Game 2: Cal State East Bay 7, CSUSB 6

The Coyotes conceded five unearned runs in the top of the second inning to fall behind early, and could not climb all the way out of the hole.

In the bottom of the second, the Coyotes chiseled away at the lead when senior pitcher Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) belted a no-doubt three-run homer over the wall in left to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Cal State East Bay scored would proved to be two enormous insurance runs in the top of the sixth, because Legler connected for her second three-run dinger of the game in the bottom of the frame, cutting CSUSB's deficit to 7-6.

The Coyotes however were unable to complete the comeback, falling in the series finale by just a single run.

Legler was the only Coyote to record multiple hits in the defeat, going 2-for-3 with the two homers and all six Coyote RBIs. She took the loss in the circle, allowing just two earned with four Ks in the complete game.

CSUSB's next series will be played at Cal State Monterey Bay next weekend, starting on Friday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
