SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team fell just short of a comeback on Friday afternoon as it opened its four-game series with #12 Cal State Monterey Bay with a 4-2 loss on Friday afternoon.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 19-18 overall and 11-9 in CCAA play.
The Otters scored the game's first four runs, keeping CSUSB off the board until the top of the eighth inning. In the eighth, the Yotes started their comeback bid when senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) knocked in classmate
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) with a base hit up the middle, pulling the Yotes to within three at 4-1.
An inning later, pinch hitter
Noah Betanco (San Diego, Calif.) belted a solo home run over the wall in left field to drop the deficit to two, but that would be as close as the Coyotes would get, as the visitors ran out of time.
Redshirt junior
Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Coyotes offensively in the defeat, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
On the bump, the defeat was charged to redshirt senior ace
Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.), who allowed four earned runs over 7.0 innings pitched.
The Coyotes and Otters will play games two and three of their series on Saturday, with first pitch in the first game of the doubleheader slated for 12 p.m.
