SEASIDE, Calif. – The California State University, San Bernardino baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUSB dropped game one by a final score of 18-5, before being knocked off 4-1 in game two.
With the defeats, the Yotes fall to 19-20 overall and 11-11 in CCAA play.Â
Game 1: Cal State Monterey Bay 18, CSUSB 5
The Coyotes jumped out early. Redshirt junior
Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led off with a single, and senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) brought him home with an RBI single after he advanced on a passed ball, giving CSUSB a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Alfaro was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it 2-0, and Dominguez followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Monterey Bay answered in the third and then broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. The Otters' offense stayed hot from there, totaling 23 hits and scoring in every inning except the first.
An Alfaro RBI single and
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) sacrifice fly would account for the rest of the CSUSB offense in the defeat.
Starting pitcher
Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs over 3+ innings.
Senior
Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the only Coyote with multiple hits in the game one loss, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Game 2: Cal State Monterey Bay 4, CSUSB 1
Dominguez continued his strong day at the plate, giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first inning.
CSUSB recorded a hit in each inning from the second through the fourth, but was unable to capitalize. Monterey Bay responded quickly, tying the game in the first before taking control with three runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run homer.
On the mound, redshirt junior
Kailer Saunders (Boise, Idaho) turned in a solid outing despite the loss, allowing just two earned runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.
The Coyotes and Otters will wrap up their series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
