Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Stanislaus State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept a CCAA doubleheader against Stanislaus State Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

The Coyotes opened the day with a 7-2 win, before holding off the Warriors 9-8 in game two.

The wins see the Yotes improve to 19-17 overall on the season and 11-8 in the CCAA.

Game 1: CSUSB 7, Stanislaus State 2

Stanislaus State took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but CSUSB answered right back in the bottom of the frame when redshirt senior belted a two-run homer to left.

The Warriors re-knotted the game with a solo shot in the top of the second, but Coyote senior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) responded with one of his own to put CSUSB back ahead by a score of 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Coyotes broke the game open by plating four runs. Junior Michael Gonsalez (Los Angeles, Calif.), sophomore Keedan Nadeau (Highland, Calif.), and Giesegh all delivered RBI hits in the inning, and another run scored on a Warrior fielding error.

The Yotes held Stanislaus State off the scoreboard for the final seven innings of the contest, and allowed only four hits in that time. On the hill, junior Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) got the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched with six strikeouts. Senior reliever Jesse Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) threw two shutout innings, allowing just one hit.

Giesegh, Barto, and senior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) each had two hits to pace the Coyotes offensively.

Game 2: CSUSB 9, Stanislaus State 8

For the second game in a row, it was the Warriors who struck first, scoring three times in the top of the second to snag an early lead.

CSUSB exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third to flip the game on its head. Redshirt junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Dominguez started the big rally with RBI singles, before Barto and Nadeau each hit three-run home runs to break the game open.

An inning later, Barto connected for a solo homer to the opposite field, his second home run of the game and third of the doubleheader, to put CSUSB ahead 9-3 in the fourth.

Stanislaus State climbed all the way back to pull to within one in the top of the seventh and final frame, but senior Harrison Cordeiro (Chicago, Ill.) came in and closed out the win for his first save of the season.

On the hill, the win went to starter Kailer Saunders (Boise, Idaho), who struck out six over 5.2 innings pitched.

Barto's 3-for-3 effort with two home runs paced CSUSB offensively, and he also made a huge catch reaching into the Coyote dugout in the top of the seventh inning.

The Coyotes and Warriors will play the final game of their series on Sunday at Fiscalini Field, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
