SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team defeated Stanislaus State 15-3 Friday afternoon in a CCAA contest at Fiscalini Field.
With the win, the Yotes improve to 17-17 overall on the season and 9-8 in CCAA play.
The Coyotes scored in each of the first six innings of the contest to take command of the game right from the outset. CSUSB scored three times in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two-run homer from senior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) and an RBI single from freshman Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.).
Stan State got all three runs back in the top of the second, but CSUSB reclaimed the lead with a single run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI fielder's choice from Dominguez.
Coyote junior Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) belted a solo shot in the bottom of the third to extend CSUSB's lead to 5-3, and in the fourth, the Yotes posted four runs to break the contest open. Junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) delivered a two-run double in the frame, followed by the second homer of the game from Dominguez to make it 9-3.
Senior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) got in on the fun in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left, putting CSUSB up 10-3. A two-run shot from Rodriguez, his second homer of the game, put the Coyotes up by nine in the sixth.Â
CSUSB capped off the offensive explosion with a pinch hit three-run home run over the wall in right in the bottom of the eighth, giving the game its final score of 15-3.
Rodriguez had a huge game at the plate for CSUSB, going 4-for-5 with a pair of homers and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. He drove in three runs while also scoring three. Dominguez went 2-for-5 with five RBIs, while Giesegh and Pettingill each had a pair of hits.
Redshirt Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) got the win on the hill, going seven strong and allowing three earned on five hits with eight Ks and no walks.
The Coyotes and Warriors will play games two and three of their series on Saturday. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 12 p.m.
