SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a 16-11 decision to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon in a CCAA contest at Fiscalini Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes move to 4-11 on the season and 0-4 in the CCAA.
Cal Poly Pomona scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but CSUSB responded in the bottom half with a solo home run from redshirt junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.). The Coyotes added three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Alfaro and an RBI single from senior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) that tied the game at 4-4.
In the third inning, freshman Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) hit a solo home run and CSUSB took a 6-4 lead after drawing a Giesegh bases-loaded walk. Cal Poly Pomona answered in the fourth with a run on a wild pitch and added another run in the fifth to regain the lead. San Bernardino countered in the fourth when Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) hit a two-run home run, and Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.)Â added a two-run homer in the fifth as the Coyotes extended their lead.
CSUSB added a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Alfaro, giving the Coyotes an 11-7 advantage. Cal Poly Pomona responded with a nine-run eighth inning to take control of the game and held off the Coyotes over the final frames.
San Bernardino finished with 14 hits in the contest. Alfaro led the Coyotes with multiple extra-base hits and four RBIs. Pettingill and Giesegh each paced CSUSB with a team-high three hits.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will play Redlands on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. at Fiscalini Field.
