Softball Takes One of Two at West Coast Challenge

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday on the second day of the West Coast Challenge at Rosetta Canyon Sports Park.

CSUSB opened the day with a 5-4 win over Regis University, before falling 5-2 to Lubbock Christian University in the nightcap. The results see the Yotes move to 5-4 on the young season.

Game 1: Cal State San Bernardino 5, Regis 4

The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead in their first game of the day on a two-out triple from redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.), plating senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) from second base.

The 1-0 Coyote advantage held up all the way until the top of the fifth inning, when CSUSB added three more runs to go ahead by four. Senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) drove in the first Coyote run of the inning with an RBI double, followed by an RBI groundout from Castillo and another RBI double, this time from senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.).

Regis got one back in the bottom of the fifth for their first run of the day, but CSUSB answered when sophomore Daniela Luden (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to up CSUSB's lead back to four.

Regis threatened with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and got the tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh, but Coyote redshirt sophomore Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.) was up to the task, forcing a game-clinching groundout to secure the win.

Legler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Coyote offense, while Castillo went 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. The win was credited to Skinner, who threw 4.2 shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three.

Game 2: Lubbock Christian 5, Cal State San Bernardino 2

CSUSB fell behind early in game two and could never fully recover, as Lubbock Christian scored twice in the top of the first before the Yotes came to the plate.

The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Bejarano continued her strong senior season with a solo home run over the fence in right center field to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Lubbock Christian scored two more in the top of the sixth, but the Coyotes got one back on an RBI single from Castillo, cutting the deficit to 4-2. The Lady Chaps added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to give the game its final score of 5-2.

Bejarano and Castillo each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the defeat, but the rest of the Coyote lineup combined for just three hits.

Legler threw a complete game in the circle, allowing five earned while striking out three and only walking one batter.

CSUSB will conclude play at the West Coast Challenge on Sunday morning with a contest against Colorado Christian at 9:30 a.m.
