SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell 50-48 to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters Thursday evening at the Kelp Bed.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 8-12 and 6-9 in CCAA play.
CSUSB started the game off on a 10-4 run, with sophomore Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.) scoring the first five points, along with a three from Ariana Harper (Los Angeles, Calif.) and a layup from Riy Smith (Oceanside, Calif.). The Yotes held a narrow 12-10 lead after the first quarter.
CSUSB went up by seven points, 17-10, after a layup from junior Sincere Hardwick (San Bernardino, Calif.) early in the second quarter. A three-pointer by senior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.) gave the Yotes a 24-19 lead, which they would take into the halftime break.
Monterey Bay tied it up 27-27 midway through the third quarter. The Coyotes responded by going on a 9-2 run to take a 36-29 lead, which included two layups from freshman Alexis Tinnin (Bakersfield, Calif.). CSUSB would hold a narrow 38-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
While the Coyotes were up by as many as six points in the fourth, Monterey Bay mounted a comeback and took their first lead with 3:29 left to go as part of a 9-0 run.
The Yotes did not give up, with Cassell hitting a layup, cutting the Otters' lead to one with 1:54 remaining, and a three-pointer to also cut it to one with 37 seconds left. She ended up with 21 points, marking her third consecutive 20+ point performance.
On the ensuing possession CSUSB did not foul, electing to play defense. Monterey Bay missed a jumper, but secured a rebound, forcing the Coyotes to foul. The Otters made one of their two free throw attempts, missing the second, but secured the offensive rebound, ultimately securing the victory.
Up next, CSUSB travels back down to Southern California to face Cal State San Marcos on the road. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
