Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Central Washington

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Central Washington University Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

The Coyotes won a tight 13-11 decision, before shellacking the Wildcats 20-2 in game two.

The much-needed wins see the Yotes improve to 3-7 overall on the season

Game 1: CSUSB 13, Central Washington 11

Central Washington scored the contest's first four runs before the Coyotes got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run bomb from senior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) to cut the deficit in half.

Central Washington responded with five runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 9-2 lead, but the Coyotes were far from finished. RBI singles from freshman Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) and junior Eric Aguayo (Riverside, Calif.) sandwiched an RBI fielder's choice from senior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.), pulling CSUSB to within four in the bottom of the sixth.

Cal State San Bernardino got one run closer in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to make the score 9-6.

With two on in the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitter Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) belted a no-doubt pinch hit home run to level the score at 9-9. Later in the inning, Dominguez had an RBI single and  Pettingill notched an RBI double, before Luna capped the seven-run frame with a two-run base hit through the left side, putting CSUSB up 13-9.

A two-run dinger in the top of the ninth drew Central Washington to within two, but that's as close as they'd get as the Yotes secured the 13-11 win.

The Coyotes combined for 19 hits in the win, including a 5-for-5 effort from Dominguez with four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) also had a three-hit performance with three runs scored and a walk.

Sophomore Kade Finazzo (Highland, Calif.) had a strong outing on the hill, throwing four innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. He allowed two earned with three Ks in the win. Junior Aidan Colin (Garden Grove, Calif.) came in and got the final out of the ballgame to earn the save.

Game 2: CSUSB 20, Central Washington 2

The Coyotes left little doubt in game two of the doubleheader, scoring in each of the first four innings of the seven-inning affair to cruise to the win.

Junior Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) got the ball rolling for the Coyotes in the bottom of the first, driving home Giesegh with a base hit to right field.

The Coyotes put up a five-spot in the bottom of the second to go ahead by six. Giesegh's RBI single opened the frame, followed by a two-run ground rule double from Dominguez. Pettingill capped the inning with a two-run base hit to center.

The offense kept on rolling in the bottom of the third, when the Yotes scored seven times to go ahead 13-0. Redshirt junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) opened up the frame with an RBI fielder's choice, before Dominguez and Rodriguez each posted two-run singles. Barto put the cherry on top with his second home run of the day, a two-run shot over the wall in left.

Central Washington scored once in the top of the fourth, but CSUSB responded with six in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 19-1. Alfaro drove in the first run of the inning with a double to left, before a two-run single from Dominguez and a three-run blast off the bat of Rodriguez.

After a Central Washington run in the top of the fifth, Barto helped the Coyotes eclipse 20 runs with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, giving the game its final score of 20-2.

Giesegh, Dominguez, Pettingill, and Rodriguez all had three hits in the win, with Dominguez and Rodriguez also driving in six apiece. Dominguez finished the doubleheader going 8-for-8 on the day with 10 RBIs. He reached safely in all nine plate appearances on the day.

Redshirt junior Kailer Saunders (Boise, Idaho) got the win on the bump for the Coyotes, going five strong, allowing two earned on five hits with five Ks in the win.

The Coyotes and Wildcats will play the final game of their series on Sunday at Fiscalini Field, with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
