SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team defeated Central Washington University 16-12 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Fiscalini Field.
With the win, the Coyotes snag their first series win of the season and improve to 4-7 overall.
The Coyotes jumped out to a big lead in the bottom of the first inning. The first seven batters of the frame all reached safely, and the Yotes scored six runs. Senior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) broke the ice with a leadoff home run over the wall in center field, and two batters later, classmate Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) hit an opposite field homer off the top of the fence and out to stretch CSUSB's to three.
Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) and Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each had RBI hits in the frame, and the final run came home from third on a double play ball.
Central Washington got one back in the top of the second, but CSUSB scored twice in the bottom of the frame to go ahead by seven. Giesegh hit a solo shot for his second homer of the game, and freshman Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) delivered a sacrifice fly in the inning.Â
Central Washington chiseled away at the lead by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth, but CSUSB scored once in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Solano.
The Wildcats took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth, until Solano delivered a two-run base hit through the right side in the sixth, putting the Coyotes ahead 11-10.Â
Central Washington took the lead once again with a two-run homer in the seventh, but that would be the end of their offense for the day. Pettingill leveled it up with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the seventh, before a two-run pinch hit double from junior Alejandro McKay (San Diego, Calif.) gave the Coyotes the lead for good. Solano and Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) each had RBI singles for some insurance, giving the game its final score of 16-12.
The win was credited to Coyote reliever Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.), his first victory of the 2026 season.Â
Solano led the Coyotes offensively with four hits and four RBIs, while Giesegh, Alfaro, and Dominguez all notched three hits.
The Coyotes will be off next weekend before returning to action to open CCAA play against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, March 6. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
