SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team fell 12-10 to Central Washington on Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field in a non-conference matchup.
With the loss, the Coyotes move to 1-7 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 1-3.
CSUSB opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when redshirt junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) delivered an RBI single to score senior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.).
Central Washington evened the game in the second with a solo home run, but the Coyotes regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) RBI groundout that plated senior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.), and Alfaro added a sacrifice fly in the third to extend the advantage to 3-1.
San Bernardino scored three runs in the fourth inning to push its lead to 6-1, taking advantage of walks and a Wildcat error. Central Washington responded with five runs in the fifth inning to come back to level the score
In the bottom of the fifth, Pettingill hit a three-run home run and Luna followed with a solo shot as CSUSB jumped back in front at 10-6.
The Wildcats would storm all the way back for the second time however, scoring in each of the final five innings, taking the lead in the top of the eighth and holding on for a two-run victory.
Pettingill led the Coyotes offensively with three hits and three RBIs, finishing only a triple shy of the cycle. Luna recorded a home run, and Alfaro drove in two runs.
CSUSB and Central Washington will play games two and three of their series at Fiscalini Field on Saturday. First pitch in the first game of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
