Softball Salvages Split on Day Two at CUI Kickoff Classic

IRVINE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a non-conference doubleheader for the second consecutive day at the CUI Kickoff Classic.

CSUSB opened the day by falling 11-3 to Dominican University, before taking down Nebraska-Kearney 7-2 in the nightcap. The results see the Yotes move to 2-2 on the season.

Game 1: Dominican 11, Cal State San Bernardino 3 (5 Innings)

The Coyotes took an early advantage in their first contest of the day, going ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) scored the game's first two runs on consecutive wild pitches, before junior Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) delivered an RBI single.

Dominican responded swiftly however, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the frame. They would go on to score another in the second and two more in the third to give the game its final score of 11-3.

Legler went 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot to pace the Coyotes offensively. In the circle, she was charged with the loss despite only allowing two earned runs.

Game 2: Cal State San Bernardino 7, Nebraska-Kearney 2

CSUSB came out the gates hot, scoring in each of the first three innings of the contest to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Castillo got the Coyotes going in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Legler from third on a sacrifice fly to right field. Two more Coyotes would score in the second on an RBI triple from Legler, followed by another sac fly, this time from senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.).

The Coyotes broke it open in the bottom of the third, crossing home plate four times to take a seven-run advantage. Senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) and Legler had back to back RBI singles to open the Coyote scoring in the frame, before Griego capped it off with a two-run single.

The Lopers scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but fell far short in their comeback bid, as the Yotes secured their second win of the weekend.

In the circle, freshman Mo Cash (Upland, Calif.) grabbed her first collegiate win with a stellar outing. She allowed just one earned run in 4.2 innings pitched, striking out three and allowing four hits. Sophomore Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) looked sharp in relief, allowing just one earned over 2.1 innings.

At the plate, Legler had another huge game, going 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Brazill went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Griego and senior Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) also each had a pair of hits.

CSUSB will close out play at the CUI Kickoff Classic on Sunday with a contest against Hawaii Pacific at 1:30 p.m.
