IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) tossed a no-hitter on Sunday afternoon as the California State University San Bernardino softball team took down Hawaii Pacific University 11-0 in the final game of the CUI Kickoff Classic.
With the win, the Coyotes finish the tournament at 3-2 on the season.
The game started as a low-scoring defensive battle, until the top of the fourth inning, when Coyote senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) deposited a solo homer over the left center field fence for a 1-0 lead.
CSUSB broke the contest open in a massive way in the top of the fifth, scoring 10 runs to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Bejarano started the inning with an RBI single, followed by consecutive two-run hits from Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) and Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.).
Sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) gave the Coyotes a seven-run lead with an RBI single, and two more runs crossed home plate on a throwing error. A Legler RBI groundout and Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The story of the game was Legler though, who faced the bare minimum of 15 batters in the no-hitter. The only baserunner that prevented a perfect game came on a fourth inning walk, but was immediately retired on a double play. Legler struck out three en route to the first Cal State San Bernardino no-hitter since 2016.
Griego, Venegas, and Bejarano all paced the Coyote offense with two hits.
At the end of the tournament, Legler was named the Co-Most Valuable Player as well as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. She was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Castillo and freshman pitcher Mo Cash (Upland, Calif.).
The Coyotes will continue non-conference play next weekend at the West Coast Challenge in Lake Elsinore. Their first contest is on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Western New Mexico.
