SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team rallied for a five-set victory over Emporia State University Friday afternoon at the San Diego Invitational at Point Loma Nazarene University. Set scores were 25-18, 17-25, 26-28, 25-22, 15-12.
With the win, CSUSB improves to 2-0 overall on the young season.
CSUSB hit .333 in set number one to take an early 1-0 advantage. Redshirt freshman Sarai Ross (San Bernardino, Calif.) led the Coyotes with five kills in the opening set, while sophomore Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.) posted four kills.
CSUSB struggled offensively in set two, notching just seven kills with six attack errors and six service errors, and the Hornets capitalized, evening the score by winning the set 25-17.
The third set was the tightest set of the afternoon, featuring nine ties and four lead changes en route to the 28-26 victory for Emporia State. Junior Allison Legates (Los Altos, Calif.) led the Yotes with four kills in set number three.
Emporia State appeared on their way to a victory in four sets after opening up a three-point lead at 17-14, but the Yotes would respond with a 6-0 run with Legates at the service line to take command and eventually force a fifth set. Six of the points on the run came on Legates service aces, while junior Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) also contributed a kill.
The score was tied up six times in the fifth and final set, but eventually it would be the Coyotes who hit 15 first. Ross and Pedersen each had four fifth-set kills, and Birdie Alford (Tallahassee, Fla.) capped it off with a match-clinching service ace to secure the victory.
Ross led the way for the Coyotes with 15 kills and eight digs in the win, while Legates had seven kills on 14 attempts with only one error for a .429 attack percentage. Setters Jaiden Van Horn (Elk Ridge, Utah) and Alford each had double-doubles with 23 and 15 assists respectively and 12 digs each to lead the team.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will wrap up play at the San Diego Invitational with a contest against the hosts from Point Loma on Saturday. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
