SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's soccer team suffered a season-opening 2-0 defeat at the hands of Vanguard Univerity Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Premier Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes open their season at 0-1.
The Lions opened the scoring in just the fifth minute of the contest on a goal from Rachel Penick and never looked back. The Yotes held a 9-6 first half shot advantage, but a back-breaker in the 38th minute from Vanguard's Francesca Lindstrom stretched the lead to two late in the half.
Neither team scored in the second half, despite the Coyotes outshooting Vanguard 9-4 overall and 4-1 on shots on goal.
Vanguard's Olivia Weidner posted a six-save shutout, while CSUSB's
Anai Olmedo (Wildomar, Calif.) made three saves in her Coyote debut.
Next up for the Yotes, they will continue their brief season-opening homestand by hosting CUI at Premier Field on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
