SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team knocked off Point Loma Nazarene University 2-1 Thursday evening in non-conference action at the PLNU Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Yotes open their season with a record of 1-0-0.
The Coyotes netted the first goal of the game on a penalty kick exactly 22 minutes into the contest. After redshirt sophomore Alix Soukup (Canoga Park, Calif.) was taken down in the box, senior Anthony Morales (Orange, Calif.) slotted home the PK low to the right side to give the Yotes a 1-0 advantage.
Despite a 4-2 shot deficit in the opening 45 minutes, the Coyotes still took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was all San Bernardino, as the visitors were able to secure the season-opening win. The Coyotes picked up some insurance in the 82nd minute, when Rafa Fonseca (Fontana, Calif.) slid home his first goal of the season off a feed from Soukup. The marker proved to be vital, as Point Loma netted their lone goal of the game with 14 seconds to play to give the game its final score of 2-1.
The win in net went to redshirt junior Donovan Palomares (Boyle Heights, Calif.), who kept a clean sheet through the first 89 minutes of the contest.
The Coyotes held a narrow 10-8 lead in the shot category, including an 8-4 edge in the second half. Each team finished with four yellow cards, and the Yotes held a 5-4 advantage in corners.
Next up, the three-game road trip continues for the Coyotes at Biola University on Saturday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
