SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team defeated Fresno Pacific University 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Premier Field.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 5-0-1 overall on the season.
The contest nearly went to halftime scoreless, but CSUSB broke the ice with three minutes remaining to take a 1-0 lead. A Diego Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.) free kick from the left wing found the foot of senior Tony Negrete (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.), who buried his first goal of the season.Â
FPU had a 7-5 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, but Negrete's late marker was the only shot on target.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Coyotes doubled their lead when sophomore Alix Soukup (Canoga Park, Calif.) found the back of the net off another free kick. Lopez's initial free kick was headed down by junior Luis Marin (Los Angeles, Calif.) directly to the foot of Soukup, who powered it off the post and in for the 2-0 advantage.
Cal State San Bernardino stretched its lead to three in transition in the 67th minute. Senior Anthony Morales (Orange, Calif.) finished into the bottom right corner of the goal off a feed from sophomore Rafa Fonseca (Fontana, Calif.).
Fresno Pacific made things interesting with goals in the 75th and 80th minutes, but the Coyotes held on down the stretch to earn the 3-2 win.
In goal, senior Juanpablo Camacho (Norwalk, Calif.) made four saves, all in the second half, to earn his third win in as many outings this season.
Next, the Yotes will play a non-conference contest against Cal State San Marcos on the road on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
