SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team defeated Azusa Pacific University 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Premier Field.
With the win, the Coyotes move to 4-0-1 overall on the season.
Azusa Pacific scored first in the 12th minute to take early control of the game, but the Coyotes answered in the 35th minute. Sophomore Rafa Fonseca (Fontana, Calif.) finished off a left-footed finish low to the bottom right corner of the goal to level the game before the half. Junior Sebastian Gomez (La Dorada, Colombia) assisted on Fonseca's second goal of the season.
The Yotes scored the eventual game-winner early in the second half. After receiving a feed from Daniel Santos (Culver City, Calif.), redshirt junior Anthony Luna (Santa Clarita, Calif.) unleashed a screamer that found the top right corner of the goal, giving the Yotes a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.
CSUSB was able to hold off APU in the remaining 40 minutes of the contest, despite a 10-4 second half shot deficit. Junior goalkeeper Donovan Palomares (Boyle Heights, Calif.) made four of his six saves in the second half to earn his second win of the season.
Next, the Yotes will conclude their home stand with a battle against future CCAA foe Fresno Pacific on Sunday at Premier Field. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m.
