FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss at the hands of Alaska Fairbanks Friday evening at the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic. Set scores wer 20-25, 25-17, 16-25, 26-24, and 15-12.
With the loss, the Coyotes move to 4-2 overall on the season.
Five different Coyotes had multiple first set kills, as the visitors won a back-and-forth opening set to take a 1-0 lead. The Nanooks led in the set 20-19, but a 6-0 Coyote run flipped the script, capped by a set-clinching kill from senior
Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.).
CSUSB managed only seven second set kills as the Nanooks leveled the score. The set was tight in the early going, as a
Sarai Ross (Beaumont, Calif.) kill made it 10-9 Yotes at the midway point of the set, but Alaska Fairbanks scored seven of the next eight points to take a 16-11 lead, and pulled away to take set two.
The Coyotes started strong in set number three and never looked back. After scoring the first five points of the set, the Yotes would eventually lead by as many as 13 at 20-7 before closing out the set on a kill from
Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.).
The Yotes led for most of the fourth set, and led by as many as six at 15-9 after a Hoffmann kill, but could not hold on. A 10-4 run levelled the score at 19-19, and the teams traded blows until 24-24, when CSUSB had a service error and attack error back to back to send the match to a decisive fifth.
The fifth was extremely tight in the early going, and was tied at every number from one through eight before the Nanooks went on a run. After trailing 8-7, Alaska Fairbanks went on a 6-0 run to push the Coyotes right to the edge, and CSUSB simply couldn't climb out of the hole.
Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) had 12 kills to lead the way for the Coyotes, while
Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in 10 of her own. Libero
Jayden Chornomud (Canyon Lake, Calif.) notched 26 digs in the defeat, while setter
Jaiden Van Horn (Elk Ridge, Utah) led the way with 22 assists.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will wrap up play at the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. first serve against Rollins College.
