AZUSA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team dropped a pair of contests to Azusa Pacific University Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Athletic Complex.
The Yotes dropped game one 4-3, followed by a 3-1 defeat in game two.
With the defeats, CSUSB drops to 20-20 overall on the season.
Game 1 - Azusa Pacific 4, Cal State San Bernardino 3
The Coyotes jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in each of the first three innings of the contest. Senior
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) drove in the game's first run with an RBI triple to center field in the first, plating
Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.).
In the second, sophomore
Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch, before Tosi hit a solo home run in the top of the third to put the Yotes up by three.
The Cougars scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to draw to within one, and the Coyotes carried the one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Azusa Pacific however connected for a two-run walk-off home run to end the contest.
All eight Coyote hits came off the bats of just four players, as Venegas went 3-for-3, while Tosi and junior
Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) each had a pair. Galliano had the other CSUSB base hit.
Game 2 - Azusa Pacific 3, Cal State San Bernardino 1
Azusa Pacific did all of their damage in innings two and three, taking a 3-0 advantage early.
The Coyotes mustered their only run in the top of the sixth on an RBI base knock from Venegas, scoring senior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) from second.
CSUSB got the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but could not capitalize and fell short by a 3-1 final. Â
The Yotes scattered only four hits in the defeat, all singles. They were led by a strong relief outing in the circle from senior
Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.), who threw two shutout frames out of the bullpen to keep CSUSB within striking distance.
The Coyotes will return to CCAA action on Friday when they start a four-game set with a doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos. First pitch in game one of the series is slated for 1 p.m.
