Softball Quieted by Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team was swept in their doubleheader against the Cal State San Marcos Cougars on Friday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.

With the losses, the Coyotes fall to 20-22 with a 12-14 record in CCAA play.

Game 1 - Cal State San Marcos 6, CSUSB 0

In the top of the first inning, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) singled but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a double.

Cal State San Marcos opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with one run, added three more in the second, and tacked on another in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead

The Coyotes managed to get a couple of baserunners aboard in the top of the seventh, but couldn't convert, as the Cougars held on for a 6-0 victory.

Game 2 – Cal State San Marcos 5, CSUSB 4

The Cougars capitalized on a few walks in the first inning to jump ahead early 4-0.

In the fourth, senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) walked and advanced to second and third on consecutive at-bats. She was driven in by sophomore Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.), cutting CSUSM's lead to 4-1.

After CSUSM added a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Coyotes responded in the fifth with back-to-back singles by seniors Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Alex Hooper (Chino, Calif.). A few batters later, senior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) drove in both runners to make it 5-3.

The Coyotes added another run in the sixth to narrow the gap to 5-4. Tosi singled, and pinch-runner Belinda Lujano (Burbank, Calif.) came around to score.

In the top of the seventh, CSUSB threatened again. Lapeña reached third after a bunt single, a groundout, and a wild pitch. Tosi then singled, putting runners on the corners, but the Coyotes were unable to push across the tying run.

The Coyotes will wrap up their series against Cal State San Marcos with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
