SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team lost 23-19 in 10 innings to the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
With the loss, the Coyotes fall to 24-18 overall and 16-16 in CCAA play.
Cal State Dominguez Hills jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Toros added two more runs in the top of the second. Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2.
CSUSB erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-5 lead. Highlights included a two-run double by Noah Betanco (San Diego, Calif.), an RBI single from Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan), a two-RBI single from Adrian Hinojosa Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.), and a three-run homer by Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.).
Dominguez Hills responded with two runs in the top of the fourth, but CSUSB tacked on another in the bottom half with an RBI single from Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.), extending the lead to 11-7.
The Toros stormed back with five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 13-11 lead. However, the Coyotes answered in the bottom of the frame with six runs of their own. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and a bases-clearing double from Shedlock, putting CSUSB ahead 17-13.
The Coyotes added two more runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies from Solano and Ruiz, making it 19-13.
Dominguez Hills rallied in the top of the ninth, hitting three home runs as part of a six-run inning to tie the game at 19-19. After CSUSB was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, the Toros surged for four runs in the top of the 10th and shut down the Coyotes in the bottom half to seal the 23-19 victory.
Up next, the Coyotes travel to Cal State Los Angeles for a four-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
