Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 8-1 in the first game of their CCAA doubleheader on Friday afternoon, but game two was suspended due to darkness.
With the win, the Yotes improve to 21-24 overall and 13-16 in the CCAA.
The first game of the day started as a pitchers' duel, remaining scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Coyotes broke it open. Junior
Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) opened the scoring by hitting a solo home run over the center field wall for her first collegiate homer, and three batters later, senior
Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) connected for a two-run shot to put CSUSB up 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit a solo home run off the right field foul pole, and pinch runner
Belinda Lujano (Burbank, Calif.) scored on a throwing error to put CSUSB up by five.
Humboldt got one back in the top of the sixth, but the Yotes put the contest to rest with a two-run Tosi home run and a solo shot from
Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) in the bottom of the frame, giving the game its final score of 8-1.
Coyote senior
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) threw a gem in the circle to earn her fifth win of the season, throwing a complete game four-hitter, allowing one earned run while striking out a season-high 10. She is now just one strikeout away from 100 on the season.
Tosi was the offensive leader for the Coyotes, going 2-for-2 with two homers, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. She also took two free passes.
The second game was suspended due to darkness at the conclusion of the ninth inning tied at 4-4. The game will be continued on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., prior to the previously scheduled doubleheader. The Senior Day ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the suspended game, prior to the third game of the series. A full recap of the contest will be included with the Saturday game recap.
