SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team split their doubleheader against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
With the split, the Coyotes are now 24-17 with a 16-15 record in CCAA Play
Game 1: Cal State Dominguez Hills 4, CSUSB 3 (10 Innings)
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a balk and moved to third on a groundout. Graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) brought him home with a sacrifice fly, giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills responded in the top of the fifth, scoring a run to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) singled to lead off and promptly stole second base. On the next at-bat, junior Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) drove him home, putting CSUSB back in front, 2-1.
The Toros answered with a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, with the latter coming off a solo home run, giving them a 3-2 lead.
The Coyotes evened the score in the bottom of the eighth when Shedlock launched a solo home run of his own.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the ninth, junior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) drew a two-out walk. Freshman Keedan Nadeau (Highland, Calif.) entered as a pinch-runner and stole second base. Senior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) was intentionally walked, and the Toros' strategy paid off as CSUSB grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning and send the game to extras.
In the top of the 10th, CSUDH scored the go-ahead run and held CSUSB to a one-two-three inning in the bottom half to secure the 4-3 victory.
Game 2: CSUSB 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1
The Toros got off to a quick start in Game 2, scoring a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.
CSUSB responded in the third inning. Senior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) singled and stole second base. Shedlock followed with a single, and Ruiz delivered an RBI base knock to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, juniors Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) and Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) reached base with a single and a walk, respectively. Both would go on to steal a base during the inning. After another walk to Vanneste, junior Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) singled to drive in two runs, giving the Coyotes a 3-1 lead.
Cal State San Bernardino tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Senior Adrian Hinojosa Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.) grounded out to bring in Luna, and Mejia singled to score Solano, extending the lead to 5-1.
On the mound, sophomore Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) was solid, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run while striking out eight to earn the win for CSUSB.
Up next, the Coyotes conclude their series against the Toros with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
