SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader against the Stanislaus State Warriors on Sunday afternoon at CSUSB Softball Park.
The Coyotes fell 3-2 in game one, before rebounding with a 4-1 win in game two.
With the split, the Coyotes are now 12-12 overall with a 6-6 record in CCAA play.
Game 1: Stanislaus State 3, CSUSB 2
Stanislaus State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and extended it in the third with a two-run double, making it 3-0.
The Coyotes were quiet offensively until the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit an RBI double to put CSUSB on the board. On the next at-bat, graduate student Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) followed with an RBI single, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Warriors.
Unfortunately, the Coyotes could not capitalize further, and Stanislaus State held on for the win.
The Coyotes outhit Stanislaus 8-6 in the defeat, but were unable to find the clutch hits when they mattered. Galliano and
Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) led the Coyotes with a pair of hits offensively, while senior
Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) took the defeat in the circle despite a complete game.
Game 2: CSUSB 4, Stanislaus State 1
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) hit a home run to left-center, putting the Coyotes on the board.
After the Warriors tied it up in the top of the fifth, CSUSB responded with two runs. Senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) and Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to left-center field, giving the Yotes a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Coyotes extended their lead when senior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) hit an RBI double, making it 4-1 in favor of CSUSB.
From the pitching side, senior Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) threw five strong innings, allowing just one run. Vargas pitched two shutout innings in relief to earn her first save of the season.
Everyone in the Coyote starting lineup recorded a hit in the win, led by junior
Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Lapeña with two hits apiece.
Next, CSUSB heads on the road for a four-game series against Cal State East Bay, with the first pitch of game one set for 1 p.m. on Friday.
